The Cor Caroli Foundation established this regatta in 2001 in memory of Capt. Georgi Georgiev and the notorious yacht "Cor Caroli", with which the sailor sets a Guinness World Record for the fastest tour of the world with a monohull single-handed sailboat. This is an achievement that is worth being proud of and remembering.
The regatta is also dedicated to the Day of the city of Varna - August 15, whose honorary citizen and hero of the Republic of Bulgaria is Capt. Georgiev. This is the reason why the "Cor Caroli" Regatta is traditionally held every year in mid-August, always including August 15th.
During the first edition of the regatta, 22 keelboats are participating in three stages, between Varna - Obzor - Byala and Balchik, and the length of the competition route is over 80 nautical miles. In 2003, 29 yachts with 144 sailors became part of the regatta. From next year onwards, the "Cor Caroli" Regatta is held for four days. In addition to the sea stages, which are very attractive for domestic and foreign competitors, another race is included - in Varna Bay, which allows the crews to demonstrate their technical and tactical capabilities.
Over the years, the stages of the regatta have changed and started to include transitions to ports on the southern Black Sea coast such as Bourgas, St. Vlas, Nessebar, and Sozopol. The number of participating boats and their crew is constantly growing - their number varies from 40 to 50, with a total number of crew members of more than 300 people.
For this year’s edition of the regatta, the route is Bourgas - St. Vlas - Balchik - Varna, and the start of the first leg will be given on August 12. On the last day - August 15, there will be races in Varna Bay and an awards ceremony. Between 40 and 50 keelboats, divided into 7 classes, will take part in the competition. A special social program will create a good atmosphere for participants and guests, a networking environment for sponsors, partners, businesses, and organizers, as well as make sailing accessible to a broader audience.
There will be two prize-giving ceremonies, and both will end with a cocktail. The first leg of the race was named in gratitude and recognition of the general sponsor "Next Consult" and the award ceremony will take place in St. Vlas on 12.08. The final award ceremony will be on 15.08 in Varna at the closing of the regatta.
Anyone who wants to experience sailing will have the opportunity to do so on August 11 during the opening, when a Pro-Am race will be held in the Bourgas Bay. The event will allow fans to watch racing boats in all their glory, and even to board yachts and experience the emotion of sailing and racing under sail.
